Domain Name Host Explained
For someone who says “I want to start an Internet Business”, an essential component to have is a good domain name host. domain name hosting is somewhat synonymous with the concept of web hosting. This page will get you familiar with domain name hosting.
Hosting a domain name is basically having a service that gives the domain name a place to live on the internet. Some people are savvy enough to host their own domains out of their homes, but the majority of small online business owners use a hosting service.
To familiarize you with some of the lingo, your domain, and hence, website, is hosted on something called a “server”. But why these are called as servers? It is perhaps for the main reason that they serve the information to people who are looking for it on the internet. So anyone who searches for your particular site is “served” the portion of your site which they requested.
Look at it this way: Your website is like a menu in a restaurant. Just like a good menu, your website should have a nice assortment of information that the public can consume at their leisure. When people come into a restaurant they “search” the menu to in order to find what they want. Likewise, people use the internet to “search” for what they are interested in. And, like in a restaurant, the customer is served what they have requested. So it is on the web. Your website is served by the servers and provided through the search engines, like Google, to people who have made a particular request.
Now, the next question many people have is: “How do I get my website onto my hosting server?” Most people use what’s called a FTP (file transfer protocol) client to “upload” their website onto their host. A good and free FTP program is called FileZilla. FileZilla is an open source piece of software that is regularly is upgraded to keep up with the demands of evolving internet use. And, the upgrades are free also. This makes FileZilla the FTP program of choice for many internet marketers
In the not too recent past online businesses were generally offered an assortment of hosting plans, at an assortment of prices, that were determined by particular needs. Today, while various plans remain, many hosting companies can offer you “unlimited” services for a low monthly price. This is a boon for most people because all the complications of bandwidth, number of domain names and subdomains, and FTP uploads have been minimized or eliminated altogether.
Now, I don’t know if you are anything like me, but, I love simplicity. All this tech stuff is confusing enough. Hosting my website should be as simple as can be. With this in mind, there are a couple of things that I would highly recommend you look for in a webhost.
Number one is that “cPanel” is used for the admin area of your hosting account. The control panel, or cpanel program is another open source software application that takes the confusion out of maintaining and modifying your website.
Number two, you want to make sure that your webhosting company uses either, Fantastico Deluxe, or SimpleScripts, software scripts. You can use either of these two scripts to easily install any number of other website platforms onto your domain. They make building a website super easy and they are open source and free to use also!!
Now, which webhost company do I use? Well, I have had experience with Godaddy, 1and1, Bluehost, and Hostmonster. The ones that I have stuck with are Bluehost and Hostmonster. I have done this for the reasons that I listed above. Both of these companies use cPanel and you have a choice to use Fanstastico Deluxe, or SimpleScripts (I have found that SimpleScripts is easier to use) to easily install my websites.
Either Bluehost or Hostmonster take care of your needs at a price that I can afford. They are flat monthly fees that don’t go up or down no matter how much traffic I have going to my websites. You can get professional web hosting for as low as $6.95 a month (sometimes lower than that if they’re running a special discount!).
I have also found that I can reach the tech support line fairly quickly and neither Bluehost or Hostmonster appear to have outsourced this function. Because of this, people who live in North America will probably find this very satisfying.
So, summing it all up: A domain name host gives your website a place to live on the internet and also serves your website to people who are searching for it. There are several open source software programs that you can use to maintain and modify your website. You can upload your website using an open source FTP program called FileZilla. There are several hosting companies to choose from, but you want to make sure that they are using the open source programs called cPanel, Fantastico Deluxe, and SimpleScripts. Two good webhosting companies are BlueHost and Hostmonster.
Now you can say that you have a little better understanding of what a Domain Name Host is.
