What is a Market and Why is it Important?
A “market” in the general sense is a group or community of people that buy a product. Some markets are developed by the introduction of new and innovative technologies such as the digital music market. Prior to Apple’s introduction of the Ipod, the digital music market was virtually non-existant. The advent of the portable MP3 player changed the digital music landscape and opened up many more markets.
In another sense “markets” are developed by simple needs or desires. Take for instance the weight loss market. There are many who are interested in losing weight for any number of reasons. A person who may needs to lose weight for health reasons may differ from a person who needs to lose weight because they are going on their honeymoon. However, they both still want or need to lose weight and may buy the same product, but from different motivations.
To put it a little more simply: A market ( a good market) buys products for 1 of 2 reasons. Namely, they have a burning need for a solution to a problem (lose weight, eat healthy, help with a relationship). Or, they have an irrational desire for something that borders on the obsessive (such as a sport or passion)
In order to build and grow a successful online business you need to have a market to sell to. Your business idea will not be successful if you don’t consider what people are willing and wanting to buy. You may have a great idea, but, if there is no indication that you can sell it to anyone, then your business will not thrive and you will encounter nothing but frustration as you try to build interest in it. Before you become wedded to a business idea, you will want to see how big the market for it is.
Som how does someone go about doing this? First, just look for a market with high profitability. A good, but certainly not the only, example is the health and wellness market. In whatever market you look, you want to find a product or service for which there is high demand.
If there is a high demand this means that there is a good chance of high profitability. You also want to see high competitive activity or supply. Why? Because that means people are making money. It means there is a good chance you can position yourself to make a good profit if you plan your marketing wisely.
How do you check whether there are products selling to the market that you have chosen?Well, for one thing, if the market is profitable, you will see that several others are already selling specific products to the market. If you don’t see another merchant or business selling the product to that market, you’ll need to be careful because this is an indicator that the market is not that profitable. Do some research to help you to make sure that you choose a profitable market.
Another way to research your market is through internet buzz. The internet has developed into a medium where people gather and share information. You will see that there is positive chatter about it online. If the market is profitable, there should be a good demand for information that will help people find products or services that solve their problems.
There is always the option of letting others do your research for you. To do this, you can check with online article directories to see if people are writing articles on your idea or market. The top article directories will list the most popular articles that are in demand. If there are writers who are willing to invest time to write articles that are related to the market is a good indicator that the market is viable. This is one surefire way to get a good indicator on the profitability of the market.

- Trends for Websites – You can then go to Google Trends for website traffic data. Type in a website address to see visitors by region and related sites visited. This gives you an idea of who is buying.
- Insights for Search – A deeper dive into search query data for marketers and power users.
- Create your own lists of “most popular” and “fastest rising” queries for different geographic regions over time and by topic.
- Hot Trends – The top 100 fastest-rising search queries right now (U.S. only). Updates throughout the day.
Once you have collected some data on your idea and market, you will be able to make a more informed decision about moving forward with your online business idea.
