Desire and Drive

It really doesn’t matter what type of business you plan to get into, whether online or off, if you want to succeed you need to have a drive and desire to do so.  This means taking stock of your talents and shortcomings and being realistic about both of them.

Many people are infatuated with the idea of having their own online business. There has been a lot of hype and even some hysteria touting the benefits of running a business online. “Make $10,000 overnight!!!” is usually how it goes. You probably know what I am talking about. Then there are the claims of having to work only 10 minutes a day and the rest of the time you can spend on a beach in the Caribbean.

Now, we know in the back of our minds that this is hype, but many of us feed into it because sales pitches like this are meant to tap into our desires. And let me be the first to say that there’s nothing wrong with having desire. But having desire alone will not produce a successful online business.

Desire needs to be combined with firm determination or drive to reach a specified goal. Look at it this way: Desire is meeting and wanting to be with the most beautiful person (inside and out), that you have ever met. And drive is learning how and then doing everything you can to make it a reality. Now, think about that for a moment. What if the object of your desire does not live locally?, Or, what if you are not in a place financially to pursue your objective?, Or, oh, just fill in the blank…

The point is that wanting is not getting. You need to want to get, and then keep wanting to get at all reasonable costs.

Now, with any business, a well thought out business plan can let you look at where you are starting and where you want to go. But, you aren’t even at the point of writing a business plan yet. There are things that you need to understand about yourself and about how business works online. It’s important to  have a clear vision of what you want to have in the future.

Just what are the things needed to have a successful online business? First and foremost is a vision of where you want to go; What you are willing to do to get there; How you are going to get there; and, What you’re going to do once you arrive. Defining your goals and objective clearly is vital for your success in starting your online business. If you don’t have a clear idea of the what and the why of your business, it will be impossible to stay motivated. Plus, you won’t have the determination to persevere through all then frustrations that are sure to come. Any successful online entrepreneur knows exactly what they want and why they want it. Keeping this picture in front of you is like adding fuel to a fire, it keeps it going. And you want your online business to catch fire don’t you? Never forget why you chose this path and you’re sure to get there. If you are persistent in doing what you started out doing, then you will have the confidence that you will be able to create a very successful online business.

Anyone who says to themselves ” I want to start my own online business” should understand that there is a learning curve involved. Internet technology and online applications are evolving at an incredible rate. One essential quality for any aspiring internet entrepreneur  is the willingness to learn and be trained.  You must possess the willingness to invest time and effort even when direct results do not seem apparent. When you find yourself treading through unfamiliar territory you may get a little unsettled if you don’t know the terrain. An online entrepreneur needs to understand that the tools necessary to run an online business successfully are everchanging and so, there is a need for continued training and learning. Many people may not be up to this, but, if you have sufficient drive you shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever.

Being driven to succeed in your online business requires another quality. Namely, being able to think independently.  All  successful internet entrepreneurs can think for themselves and believe that they have what it takes to achieve what they want. They actually want to, and are okay with, working for themselves. They know and understand that they are responsible for their own results. While they know that they don’t have to re-invent the wheel in their business plans, they aren’t following the pack of would be internet marketers. They are comfortable with their own ideas regardless of the opinions of others.

A fundamental aspect of being driven is being disciplined. If one knows how to teach himself to work everyday you can get a lot done in a short amount of time.  Running an online business is totally different from your regular 9-5 job. When starting your online business you need to be aware that you  are not required to be anywhere at a certain time. Because of this you need to discipline yourself and make time for your business. Since you are  only accountable to yourself, your success is directly tied to your disciplined efforts. To come full circle, discipline stems from a strong desire to get what you want. This is why it is so important to konw why you want to start your own online business. If your desires are well defined and understood,  the appropriate amount of discipline will naturally flow out and you will be able to accomplish your goals and objectives.

Starting your own online business is all about putting your fate into your own hands.  Having the right amount of desire and drive is the fundamental key to your online success. As you are starting out, spend some time reflecting on your goals and objectives. Really consider the why of your desire to start an online business. This will set the stage for all that follows.
